Haitian méringue - 200 years ago

Merengue típica - 100 years ago

Merengue today

Bachata dominicana

Bachata moderna

Bachata sensual

On a typical salsa floor you will also hear other related music such as cumbia, reggaeton, cha cha and not least bachata and merengue. With their romantic and seducing rythms in comfortable tempo bachata and merenuge have charmed their way into most latin dancers hearts.

Despite their huge international success today both dances come from humble beginnings as simple rural dance music in Dominican Rebublic.

Merenuge
The island of Hispaniola is shared by Haiti and Dominican Rebublic which have been competing for dominance for centuries. During Haitis occupation in the beginning of the 19th century the haitian méringue became very popular. Just like today it was a walking dance but the music was much slower.

Eager to put distance to Hitian culture the Dominicans started to play the merengue much faster after the Dominican independence in the middle of the 19th century. At the end of that century merengue became even more popular as the artist Nico Lora replace the guitar with the accordian as the lead instrument creating merenuge típica, the style that we still dance to today.

The hip movements of merengue as well as its black, rural origin was frowned upon by the middle class and merengue was considered to have a "corrupting influence" on the youth. In Puerto Rico dancing merengue was even punishable by 10 days in prison. All this changed as the dictator Trujillo transformed the merengue to become the national music of the Dominican republic in the mid 20th century. The patriotic lyrics of those days have today returned to their former corrupting influence but merengue is still today a source of great pride for the Dominicans.

During the 1970s many Dominicans imigrated to New York and soon merenuge became a world fenomenon as popular as salsa.

Bachata
The music has its roots in merengue, son and cha cha cha but developed into its own style and got its name during the 1950s. Some musicians gave it the contemptful name of "bachata" i.e. something simple and home made.

In 1990s however bachata gained popularity abroad. It grew in status and become more commercialised and adopted for a broader international audience. The tempo slowed down and bachata got its characteristic electric guitar sound. In Europe and USA the dance steps changed. The previous steps from bolero and cha cha cha were replaced with a simpler 1-2-3-tap. With time more and more turns, tricks, footwork, styling and leading techniques have been imported from other dances such as salsa, ballroom and tango creating what is now called "bachata moderna" in contrast to the older "bachata authentica".

In the past 10-15 years many new dialects have been created, e.g. "salsa sensual" which is inspired by beautiful head and torso movements from zouk. Back home in the Dominican Republic the dance has evolved much closer to its roots and is known today simply as "bachata domincana".

What do we learn in the class?
It makes sense to follow the historical order and learn the typical steps, turns and movements of merengue before trying both authentic and modern bachata with a few inputs from bachata sensual. The course is suitable for those who have never danced merenuge or bachata before or those who have picked up a few steps here and there but would like to get a better understanding of the basics in the dance. After this weekend you will hopefully feel confident enough to start enjoying these dances on any dance floor.
